ISO 7176 series

Test methods for manual & electric (electrically powered) wheelchairs and scooters

The international series of standards specifies diversified test methods and requirements for the testing of wheelchairs and scooters. Requirements of various Guidance Documents (e.g. FDA, Medical Device Directive) and international standards (e.g. AAMI, ANSI / RESNA, CMS, EN 12183, EN 12184) correspond to test methods from the ISO 7176 series. Each part of the ISO 7176-series addresses the testing of certain individual characteristics, such as the determination of dimensions, mass, maneuvering space, seating dimensions, wheel dimensions, static stability and dynamic stability. Furthermore, test specifications and requirements for the effectiveness of brakes, the theoretical distance range and energy consumption, maximum speed, acceleration, deceleration, the braking distance, vulnerability to environmental conditions, for the static strength, impact and fatigue strength are defined. The ISO 7176-series also contains specifications for the testing of the electrical safety, power and control systems as well as for the documentation and labeling.

Stair-climbing devices

Depending on the design, stair climbing devices either provide an integrated seat or mountings to attach standard wheelchair models. The ISO 7176-28 contains requirements and test methods for such devices.
